As the pandemic evolves, so does the virus -- but so does the science about how to manage the threat. New research released this week supports the practice of "double masking," per the CDC.
The idea of wearing a multi-layered mask is not new. This is, however, the first official guidance that multiple masks may be better for minimizing the spread of the coronavirus than a single mask. The CDC specifically recommends use of a cloth mask over a surgical mask, and knotting the ear loops of the surgical mask to achieve a tighter fit.
The CDC has released these suggestions in connection with improving how masks fit, with the idea being that a better fit will better minimize spread of viral droplets.
