In the last 30 days, I have been appointed by two trial courts in Georgia and one federal court in Georgia to serve as a Special Master. Lawyers sometimes prefer a Special Master because essentially you can pick your own judge (even to conduct a bench trial in Georgia if agreed to by all the parties). I'm glad at least a few judges read my article!
